Soul in Seoul: Alumni Reception Brings Together MIIS, Midd Graduates
A November 20 alumni reception in Seoul offered a unique chance for the robust MIIS alumni community in South Korea to connect with former classmates and faculty, and to meet with President Sunder Ramaswamy. Alumni from the Translation and Interpretation, Translation and Localization Management, and International Policy Studies programs were joined by Middlebury undergraduate alumni at a joint alumni reception and dinner organized by TI Korean program head Professor Miryoung Sohn, Middlebury Trustee Catherine (Cathy) Lee (Midd ’92), and leadership gift officers Peter Jesse (MIIS) and Patrick Ganey (Middlebury).
“Cathy has been instrumental in engaging and expanding alumni activities in Seoul for both Monterey and Middlebury over the last two years,” noted President Ramaswamy after the event, “and she was a wonderful co-host.” President Ramaswamy also expressed gratitude for Miryoung’s “invaluable help in staging this event” and noted her strong relationships with a large cohort of her former students.
More than 60 alumni from Middlebury and Monterey participated in a packed dinner schedule that included presentations of thanks to Cathy Lee and Professor Sohn for their guidance and support related to the planning of the event, a trivia game focusing on both campuses, and speeches by several alumni highlighting their time at MIIS and their post-MIIS careers. The alumni speakers were Hyunsuk Lee (MACI ’03), Hyun Ja Han (MACI ’07), Moon-Ju Kim (MATI ’06), and Dave Kim (MAIPS ’05) and we are grateful to them for sharing their experiences with the audience. Adding a festive touch to the evening was emcee and well known Korean media personality Hyunsuk Lee (MACI ’03)!
