Dr. Potter’s Fall Activities

CNS Director Bill Potter has  traveled extensively this fall, participating in several international meetings and conferences on non-proliferation.  He:

  • was the lead speaker in the inaugural short course on nonproliferation for junior diplomats at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (September 26).
  • with Ambassador Aruni Wijewardane gave a presentation on the Nuclear Politics of the Non-Aligned Movement at the CNS International Advisory Board in Washington, DC on October 3.  Among the attendees were Senators Richard Lugar, former Senator Sam Nunn, Ambassador Nabil Fahmy, and Mr. Jon Wolfsthal–Special Advisor to Vice President Joseph Biden.
  • chaired a session on Nuclear Weapons-Free-Zones at the International Forum for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World in Astana, Kazakhstan. During the conference he also had meetings with Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov and IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano.
  • spoke at the morning plenary at the United Nations during a Conference on Nuclear Disarmament: A Compass Point for Progress and Accountability.  Other speakers at the plenary included UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Ambassador Jayantha Dhanapala, and UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Sergio Duarte.  Dr. Potter also chaired a Breakout Session at the same conference on “Nuclear Weapon-Free-Zones and Negative Security Assurances.”
  • gave a presentation on “Lessons from 2010 and Preparing for the 2015 NPT Review Conference” at a Conference on the Future of Nuclear Power organized by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Menlo Park, CA on October 25-26, 2011.
  • co-chaired a Roundtable Discussion on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: The Road to 2015 at the Indonesia Mission in New York on October 29.   Dr. Patricia Lewis, Ambassador Aruni Wijewardane, and Ms. Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova also participated in the meeting.
