Call for Applications: AEA Graduate Education Diversity Internship Program (GEDI)

The American Evaluation Association welcomes applications for its Graduate Education Diversity Internship Program that provides paid internship and training opportunities for academic year 2012/2013. The GEDI program works to engage and support students from groups traditionally under-represented in the field of evaluation.

The goals of the GEDI program are to: Expand the pool of graduate students of color and from other under-represented groups who have extended their research capacities to evaluation. Stimulate evaluation thinking concerning under-represented communities and culturally responsive evaluation. Deepen the evaluation profession’s capacity to work in racially, ethnically and culturally diverse settings. Interns may come from a variety of disciplines, including public health, education, political science, anthropology, psychology, sociology, social work, and the natural sciences.

The  Les Zambo Scholar Program  Selection Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012-2013 awards. The committee received many strong applications this year, but determined that two applicants best met the stated criteria of the Scholar Program.

Mercy Corps Simon Scott Fellowship (Middle East)

The Mercy Corps Simon Scott Fellowship is a 9 month opportunity, offering a professional early on in his/her career the chance to contribute to the achievement of one of Mercy Corps’ strategic initiatives of market driven programs, food security, youth, disaster risk reduction, and gender integration. The Mercy Corps Fellowship is a tribute to the Honourable Simon Scott, a former board member of Mercy Corps Scotland.  Simon was dedicated to international relief and development and had a lifelong love of North Africa and the Middle East.

This is an opportunity for a professional from North Africa or the Middle East early on in his/her career to help build communities around the world, alleviating suffering, poverty and oppression. S/he will play an active role in one of the targeted sector identified as a priority in Mercy Corp’s strategic framework and have the opportunity to interact with experienced relief and development practitioners and field leaders.  The Fellow may be placed in any of Mercy Corps locations globally but preferably in the Middle East region.

Fellows aspire to become future leaders and innovators in community development and relief work to create a better world. The Fellow will also be able to participate in Mercy Corps’ extensive knowledge management tools and learn from, and contribute to, best practices across the Mercy Corps global platform.   The specific assignment will be detailed after identifying the country that best matches the selected fellows skills and interest.

Fellows can expect:

  • Substantial experience working with a global relief and development agency
  • Exposure to a variety of work in different business functions
  • Regular bi-monthly check-in meetings with a Fellowship supervisor

Fellows are expected to:

  • Contribute past experience, skills and knowledge to the program
  • Be passionate and committed to Mercy Corps’ mission
  • Act in a professional and engaged manner
  • Have professional and/or academic interest in international relief and development
  • Provide a final written and oral presentation of their experience

Mercy Corps Fellowship Support:

  • Monthly stipend

Requirements:

  • Citizen of a country in North Africa or the Middle East
  • In early career in humanitarian assistance or relief and development
  • Completed an undergraduate degree with a focus on economics, gender, environment, nutrition, or agriculture or other related fields
  • The fellowship is unaccompanied
  • Willing to live and/or travel in volatile or challenging environments
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills, fluency in an additional language Arabic or French is preferred

The Les Zambo Scholarship Fund for MBA Students

The Fisher International MBA Program invites applicants for the 2012-2013 Les Zambo Scholarship Program. Zambo Scholars will receive a grant of up to $8,711.00 towards tuition for MBA studies. Award may be applied to Summer 2012, Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 semesters.

 

Program Purposes

  • Offer financial aid and encouragement to deserving full-time students preparing for international careers.
  • Recognize academic achievement by students in the Fisher International MBA Program.
  • Encourage academic excellence, commitment to the field, service to the Program and the Institute, and collegiality with the MBA class, staff and faculty.

Selection Criteria: Applicants must:

  • Be full-time degree candidates in the MBA program.
  • Have completed at least one full-time semester of graduate work in the Fisher International MBA.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Be in residence during the Summer 2012, Fall 2012 or Spring 2013 academic term.

Preference in Awarding the Scholarship will be provided to:

  • Applicants intending a career in international finance and/or accounting at the time of the award
  • Applicants whose financial needs are underserved
  • Applicants who demonstrate strong academic performance, a commitment to the field, service to the Program and Institute, and collegiality with the MBA class, staff and faculty.

Application Process

  • Submission of attached application form.
  • Submission of a 500 word personal statement attesting to scholarly achievement, talent, leadership qualities, character, interpersonal skills, intellectual curiosity, description of service to the Fisher MBA and the Monterey Institute, demonstrated collegiality with MBA program, staff and faculty, and community involvement.  Statement should also articulate future career aspirations of the applicant and their commitment to the field.
  • Submission of a resume.
  • Submission of unofficial transcript.
  • Submit all of the above with the following form by Friday April 27th.

Zambo Scholars may not combine this award with another scholarship which would provide a benefit greater than full tuition for one academic year. While students holding another scholarship may receive the designation as a Zambo Scholar, any combined amount above one year of full-time tuition will be returned to the Institute’s scholarship fund.

Call for Papers – The Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award

The International Leadership Association (ILA) and the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) are pleased to partner to sponsor the annual Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award to recognize outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students. The award is named in honor of the distinguished scholar and former Chief Executive Officer of the Center.

The winner of this year’s award will receive:

 

Submission Instructions

Submissions may be either empirically or conceptually based. Multi-disciplinary approaches to research are welcomed. The paper should focus on some aspect of leadership or leadership development.

Submissions will be judged by the following criteria:

1.      The degree to which the paper addresses issues and trends that are significant to the study of leadership;

2.      The extent to which the paper shows consideration of the relevant theoretical and empirical literature;

3.      The extent to which the paper makes a conceptual or empirical contribution;

4.      The implications of the research for application to leadership identification and development.

Papers must be authored and submitted by graduate or undergraduate students only. All authors must currently be students or must have graduated within 1-year prior to the submission deadline of Friday June 15, 2012. CCL staff and papers submitted to other CCL awards are ineligible. All entrants must:

1.      Provide a letter on organizational letterhead from one faculty member certifying that a student wrote the paper;

2.      Submit two PDFs electronically;

o    the first PDF should only include the manuscript with the title of the paper on the first page.

o    the second PDF (1-page only) should include the title of the paper, author’s full name, mailing and email addresses, and phone number.

Papers will be reviewed anonymously by a panel of researchers associated with CCL. Papers are limited to 30 double-spaced pages, excluding title page, abstract, figures, tables, and references. Papers above this limit that are not completely doubled spaced may not be eligible for the Award and may be returned to authors unreviewed. Papers should be prepared according to current edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

In the absence of papers deemed deserving of the award, the award may be withheld. Entries (accompanied by faculty letters) must be received by June 15, 2012. The winning paper will be announced at the 2012 ILA Conference. Entries should be emailed to ClarkAward@ccl.org.

Now Accepting Applications for the Rotary Peace Fellowship!

The Rotary Foundation is now accepting applications for the world-competitive Rotary Peace Fellowship. The fellowship provides academic and practical training to prepare scholars for leadership roles in solving conflicts around the world.

Up to 110 fellows are selected every year in a globally competitive process based on personal, academic, and professional achievements. Fellows earn a master’s-level degree or a professional development certificate in peace and conflict studies at one of six Rotary Peace Centers at leading universities in Australia, England, Sweden, Japan, the United States and Thailand.

Master’s Degree Option

  • “Building the leaders of tomorrow”
  • 15-24 months of Rotary-funded graduate study toward a master’s degree at one of our five Rotary Centers
  • Training in the root causes of conflict, theories of international relations, and effective models of cooperation, conflict resolution, and negotiation including course work and applied field experience
  • A growing network of committed alumni employed around the world in diplomacy, government, non-governmental organizations and private corporations.

Professional Certificate Option

  • “Strengthening the leaders of today”
  • 3 month professional development certificate program
  • Designed specifically for candidates already working in the field of peace and conflict studies to further their understanding of conflict resolution
  • Theoretical foundational knowledge during 8 weeks in the classroom and practical experience during 2-3 week on site fieldwork

Both programs require, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in a related field; 3 years of relevant work experience and proficiency in a 2nd language for the MA program and 5 years for the professional development certificate and proficiency in English.

Qatar Foundation’s WISE Prize for Education 2012

The Qatar Foundation’s 2012 Wise (World Innovation Summit for Education) Prize for Education, Science and Community Development recognizes an individual or team of up to six people for an outstanding, world-class contribution to education.

It is presented at the WISE Summit which is the annually held  three-day event in Doha, Qatar, brings together over 1,000 top decision-makers, thought-leaders, practitioners and education stakeholders from a wide variety of sectors and more than 100 countries to seek innovative solutions to today’s educational challenges and to share best practices.

The WISE Prize is enhancing the status of education by giving it similar prestige to other areas for which major international awards exist such as science, literature, peace and economics.

The Laureate receives an award of $500,000 (US) and a gold medal.

Nominations are invited from individuals and institutions with a demonstrable commitment to education, such as universities, schools, colleges, teachers’ organizations, research facilities, international organizations, governments, the media and private corporations.

10,000 Scholarships Available to U.S. Students to Study in China

In support of President Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative, the Chinese Ministry of Education is offering 10,000 scholarships through the China Scholarship Council for American students to study at many of their top universities. These scholarships are offered under the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) and are therefore called the “CPE scholarships.” They are available only to students whose schools can accept credit-transfer from their school’s Chinese partner university. See the list of approved Chinese universities below.

The scholarships cover all in-country costs, including tuition, housing, and an appropriate stipend. They do not cover airfare to China.

  • To apply, study abroad offices should contact partner universities in China DIRECTLY and ask about the CPE scholarships available to your students.
  • There are also scholarships available for American students to enroll directly at the Chinese universities listed below for full-degree programs. Please contact the Chinese universities directly for information on those scholarships (which are different than the CPE scholarships).
  • Additional information on the 100,000 Strong Initiative can be found at www.state.gov/100000strong.

Women Deliver Scholarship

Women Deliver is a global advocacy organization bringing together voices from around the world to call for action on maternal, sexual and reproductive health. We work globally to generate political commitment and resource investments to reduce maternal mortality and achieve universal access to reproductive health.

This groundbreaking conferences in 2007 and 2010 was the largest of the decade to focus on the health and empowerment of girls and women. In 2010, the conference convened more than 3,400 people from 146 countries in Washington, DC, including 75 parliamentarians and government ministers, five UN agency heads, the UN Secretary-General and more than 100 global media outlets. The third global conference–May 28 to 30, 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia–will be even bigger and better, with more than 5,000 public and private sector participants from around the world. The goal is to mobilize action to improve the health and well-being of girls and women everywhere.

In order to maximize participation from those traditionally under-represented, namely young people and those from the Global South, Women Deliver will be offering full conference support to a select number of participants. This support includes conference registration, round-trip economy class airfare, hotel accommodations, and a fixed stipend for visa fees and other incidentals.

Deadline for all scholarships to be received is April 15, 2012 (12pm EST), with no exceptions.

Scholarship winners must:

  • Attend the conference in its entirety.
  • Be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing. We will have translation available at plenary sessions, but this will not be possible for all breakout sessions.
  • Have regular access to email, as that will be our way of communicating with you about deadlines, registration, hotel and travel arrangements.
  • Possess an interest in global development issues.
  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner.

Bernard Schwartz Fellows

The Bernard Schwartz Fellows Program seeks to contribute to a better understanding of policy challenges and opportunities related to the growing importance of Asia in the international political arena and global economy. The program selects highly qualified professionals to serve as resident Fellows at Asia Society’s headquarters in New York City or its office in Washington, D.C. for up to one year. During the course of their residencies, Fellows direct a major and original policy project of their own design, including writing a policy relevant publication for Asia Society.

Additionally, Asia Society relies on Fellows to provide in-house expertise via the media. Opportunities to present their work and/or participate in panel discussions, conferences, and other events at the Society’s Centers in the United States and Asia are also arranged. In these ways, Fellows play an important role in the Society’s mission of promoting policy dialogue and public education on Asia.

The application process is highly competitive. Candidates are drawn from the fields of government, academia, journalism, business, and civil society. Nominations are by invitation or by application. The defining qualifications for Bernard Schwartz Fellows are a solid record of distinction, a soundly conceived project proposal with clear policy relevance, and a commitment to engaging the policy community and the broader public. The Program does not fund pre- or postdoctoral research or work toward a degree.

 

Applying for the Fellowship

Purpose:
Asia Society’s Bernard Schwartz Resident Fellows Program seeks to help meet the large and growing need for nuanced dialogue on critical issues related to the growing importance of Asia in the international political arena and global economy. The program selects highly qualified and established professionals to serve as Resident Fellows at Asia Society’s headquarters in New York City or in its Washington, D.C. Center for up to 12 months.

Responsibilities:
Bernard Schwartz Fellows engage in the following activities:

  • Direct a major and original policy project of own design, including writing a policy relevant publication for Asia Society, such as a report or other policy-related publication(s);
  • Speak regularly to print and television media in the U.S. and Asia on issues in areas of expertise as well as on topics broader than expertise area;
  • Contribute stories and writings regularly for major Asian or U.S. publications in the form of op-eds and other articles, as well as contribute writings regularly to the Asia Society website;
  • Participate in public events at Asia Society in New York and Washington, D.C., with additional potential speaking opportunities at other Asia Society Centers globally;
  • Provide advice to the organization in the conceptualization and organizing of ongoing projects and public programs and/or briefings, including planning, directions, and potential speakers, as appropriate; and
  • Participate in activities related to Asia Society’s community of Fellows, including Associate Fellows, and network of partner institutes.

Requirements:
Bernard Schwartz Fellows are selected from among the most respected leaders/thinkers from Asia and the United States. German Marshall Fund, Strong Cities, Strong Communities Fellowship

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), in cooperation with Cleveland State University (CSU) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is pleased to announce the launch of the Strong Cities, Strong Communities Fellowship Program. The fellowship program, supported by a gift from the Rockefeller Foundation, is one component of the Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) Initiative, a federal interagency pilot initiative that aims to strengthen neighborhoods, cities, and regions by enhancing the capacity of local governments to develop and execute economic visions and strategies.

The fellowship program will provide pilot cities with a class of highly-skilled fellows who are committed to public service, and who will become the next generation of leaders. It will train and place highly motivated, mid-career professionals in local government agencies for a two-year (24 month) fellowship period. Selected fellows will be placed in one of the seven pilot cities: Chester, PA; Detroit, MI; Fresno, CA; Memphis, TN; New Orleans, LA; Cleveland, OH and Youngstown, OH. Fellows will receive annual stipends in the amount of $60,000 to support fellowship activities. Travel and training costs related to the fellowship program will also be covered. Fellows will begin work on or before September 1, 2012.

Fellowships are open to practitioners (US Citizens) in the United States who have experience and expertise in economic development, public administration, community development, planning, housing, education, public finance, health, transportation, or other relevant fields, subject to the needs of each pilot city. Throughout the fellowship period, fellows will work on specific projects and will receive additional training and other support from GMF, CSU, and VT. Specifically, fellows will participate in the nationally renowned public management training academy provided by CSU’s Levin College of Urban Affairs. Fellows will also receive ongoing mentoring and support from experienced practitioners and scholars within the Levin College of Urban Affairs and Virginia Tech’s Metropolitan Institute, and will be connected to additional professional training opportunities through these institutions. Finally, fellows will have access to the German Marshall Fund’s international practitioner networks and exchange activities, including the Transatlantic Cities Network and the Cities in Transition project.

10,000 Scholarships Available to U.S. Students to Study in China

In support of President Obama’s 100,000 Strong Initiative, the Chinese Ministry of Education is offering 10,000 scholarships through the China Scholarship Council for American students to study at many of their top universities. These scholarships are offered under the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) and are therefore called the “CPE scholarships.”

The scholarships cover all in-country costs, including tuition, housing, and an appropriate stipend. They do not cover airfare to China.

  • There are scholarships available for American students to enroll directly at the Chinese universities listed below for full-degree programs. Please contact the Chinese universities directly for information on those scholarships (which are different than the CPE scholarships).

CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH GRANT COMPETITION
For Strengthening Research and Policy Links between Latin America, Asia, Caribbean and the Pacific

The initiative looks to support four research studies within the overarching theme of Macroeconomic Volatility and Regional Monetary and Fiscal Policies and five research studies under the theme Urbanization and Development: Delving Deeper into the Nexus. The average grant will be US$ 30,000 depending on the scope of the proposed research. The grant will be awarded to the organization/researcher(s) whose proposal to conduct research holds the greatest promise for improving understanding of issues pertaining to the above mentioned theme and where the potential for inter-regional learning is greatest. It is particularly important that these studies are both comparative and collaborative in nature. Relevant and timely research can then help policymakers in addressing the issues within the themes with specific and targeted policy intervention(s).

The Rotary Foundation is now accepting applications for the world-competitive Rotary Peace Fellowship. The fellowship provides academic and practical training for individuals working on solving conflicts and building peace around the world.

Professional Certificate Option
* “Strengthening the leaders of today”
* 3 month professional development certificate program
* Designed specifically for candidates already working in fields related to peaecbuilding and conflict resolution to further their understanding and build their skills
* Mix of theory and skills practiced throughout 11 weeks of combined classroom and on site field study interactions
* Eligibility Requirements: minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent; 5 years relevant work experience; proficiency in English

Master’s Degree Option
* “Building the leaders of tomorrow”
* 15-24 months of Rotary-funded graduate study toward a master’s degree at one of five Rotary Peace Centers around the world
* Training in the root causes of conflict, theories of international relations, and effective models of cooperation, conflict resolution, and negotiation including course work and applied field experience

Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneurs Program

Yoshiyama Young Entrepreneurs Program identifies and supports inspiring young entrepreneurs whose work helps alleviate domestic poverty. This competitive program is open to entrepreneurs who are operating viable businesses in the United States with the dual purpose of making a difference and making a living. Eligible entrepreneurs must have launched their business before they reached age 30. Their business must be between one and five years old. In addition to a $40,000 grant, this program provides awardees the ingredients they need to succeed, including leadership development, business mentoring, technical assistance and access to a network of peers and advisers. With this programs support and the support of partner organizations — including Investors’ Circle, Social Venture Network, B Lab, and PICnet — these individuals can take their work and communities to the next level.

Fellowships at the Center for International Security and Cooperation

New Fellowships on Cybersecurity Threats and the Future of the Internet

The Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) at Stanford University is deepening its work in the areas of cybersecurity and the future of cyberspace, (broadly defined). As part of this effort, CISAC is offering a small number of selective residential research fellowships that will begin in fall 2012.

These fellowships for scholars are at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels. Professionals with experience in this area are also welcome to apply. Applicants may be social scientists, legal or policy experts, and those with a strong science and technology background. Professionals who have worked on these issues and who have a demonstrated capacity to do high-quality policy-relevant scholarship are also eligible and welcome to apply.
