IPSS Assignment: Institute for Security Studies (ISS) – Pretoria, South Africa

Scott earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. He also has a Master’s degree in Special Education and holds teaching certificates in both Special Education and sixth through twelfth grade History.

At the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS), Scott majored in International Policy Studies, with a concentration on security and development. He was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria, South Africa during his International Professional Service Semester (IPSS) assignment.

While working in the ISS’s Arms Management Programme, he researched and wrote reports on armed violence reduction strategies and WMD education in Africa, as well as provided commentary and analysis on human security issues impacting African states.  His IPSS thesis examined the nexus between violent crime and the private security industry in South Africa.

Scott has lived and traveled extensively throughout Africa and China. He studied Mandarin-Chinese at MIIS, and has dedicated a great deal of his research on analyzing Sino-African relations.

As a native of Boston, Massachusetts, Scott is an avid Red Sox fan and is looking forward to seeing them win the World Series in 2011.
