IPSS Assignment: International Atomic Energy Agency – Vienna, Austria

Valerie Lewis was born in a small town with an older sister and two younger brothers. Her parents are Maureen and James Lewis. Valerie did her undergrad at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania and competed an intensive language program at Middlebury College before coming to the Monterey Institute. Val has been offered a job extension for the IAEA and intends to accept it if financially feasible.

While at the Monterey Institute, Val worked for both the Center for Nonproliferation Studies, and the Central Coast Children’s Foundation. With research focused on biological and chemical weapons, she completed her IPSS with the International Atomic energy Agency in the office of Public Information.

The Fukushima incident in Japan provided unique learning experiences and opportunities while working for the IAEA, accompanied by a temporary promotion to Professional staff. In addition to this experience, access to Board of Governor’s meetings and the Ministerial conference on Nuclear Safety proved invaluable in providing materials and resources for research.
