America House Lyon was inaugurated on October 25th, 2012. I  first learned about the association at a welcoming reception for Americans living in Lyon that was hosted the U.S. Consulate of Lyon. After graduating from Oregon State University, I was accepted to work as an English Teaching Assistant in Lyon, France, for one academic year. I was excited for the opportunity to gain experience in teaching, but still was looking for a way to deepen my skills on the administrative and recruitment side of International Education. When I heard that America House was a new association needing volunteers to help it launch, I immediately signed up!

America House Lyon is a non-profit association affiliated with the U.S. Consulate of Lyon.

It’s aim is to encourage French students and young professionals to study and/or work in the United States. This is done through offering English language courses and workshops with different focuses (such as business, resumes, interviews, etc), assisting in finding opportunities and applying, holding informational conferences, and hosting cultural events and activities to promote American culture.

My focus at America House was to organize cultural nights.

Some examples include movie nights showing American classics (played in English with subtitles), game nights playing American card games and group interactive games, and themed parties for holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Saint Patrick’s Day. I planned the dates, created posters and flyers, sent out e-mails, found volunteers to help set-up and take-down the events, shopped for food, and requested feedback from participants.
