The Curious Case of New MIIS Tags

Someone, I don’t know who, has been adding strange terms to our list of “MIIS Tags.” These tags help us aggregate news stories into other pages on the site, so I’m not sure how terms like “alcohol and drug abuse” and “esl application” are relevant to this tag list.

Events Calendar News

  • Create a webform like Middlebury’s to submit room request and event info from different departments to Barbara and Stacie in the President’s Office, who will input the data into the R25 database
  • We will be testing out the new calendar system sometime soon; we’re just waiting to hear back from Middlebury’s events department.

Quick Drupal Lessons

  • Deleting Faculty Profiles
  • Creating a New Webpage

What do the Blogging Community updates mean to YOU?

  • New themes: Student Services vs. GSIPM
  • Summer in the Field blog: 97 posts by students across the globe
  • I’ll be making more changes to the blogging community before the mandatory student club meeting, in hopes that more clubs will utilize this platform.

Introducing MontereySTART

We’re in the process of “soft” launching the new MontereySTART micro-philanthropy platform for student projects. Both student groups and individuals may apply to feature their projects on this platform to raise up to $2,000. We hope to help students use social media and traditional outreach methods to raise funds.

To be featured on MontereySTART, students must complete the application and clearly articulate their plan for reaching out to donors and sharing the impact of their projects from start to finish. Student projects will then be chosen by the MontereySTART selection committee, composed of staff and faculty from various departments. Help us spread the word!

Vacation!

Does anyone want to have a short training on creating html emails sometime next week since I’ll be on vacation for the next scheduled web strategy team meeting?

Google Analytics

  • Does everyone have access to the Institute’s analytics account?
  • We can use Google Analytics to run reports on the broken links in each department’s section of www.miis.edu. Let’s try a few examples.

Reminder About Uploading Photos

Remember to upload all website photos to the “Files (hidden)” page of your department’s section. If turns out that an error in the faculty pages, which caused the global navigation to appear in the right navigation area, was caused by a few faculty profile photos that were stored in the Recycle Bin.

New Features for www.miis.edu

  • MiddLab Content Type
  • New Template for Executive Education and Frontier Market Scouts programs

Blogging Community Updates

We will be updating the blogging community tomorrow around 2pm. Please keep in mind that you might not be able to access the blog during the update. Also, this week I’ve deleted twenty or thirty themes from sites.miis.edu, so now’s the time to start thinking about new themes to add to the community.

Digital Sign Update

If you have an event you would like to display on the Digital Signs, you can either email me the info (date, time location, and photo) or create your own slide with our Powerpoint/Keynote template.

Philosophical Question of the Week

To Tweet or not to Tweet, to Facebook or not to Facebook? That it the question.

Coming Soon

  • Photo Wish List – circulate as a google doc?
  • “Monterey Start” Micro-philanthropy Site
  • Mobile Web Dashboard

Web Strategy Meeting 06.30.11

Google Analytics Training

How does Monday July 11th work for everyone? We would have this training instead of our regularly scheduled web strategy meeting.

Friendly Reminders

  • Empty your Recycle bin after you delete web content.
  • When you name the URL of new pages, always separate words with dashes and use lowercase letters. Also, please don’t use abbreviations like “npts” and “tfl” in URL names. (Ex. http://www.miis.edu/academics/short/executive-education)
  • There are a few Office & Services pages that don’t have much info or photos: (Ex. International Policy & Management). We should probably look into updating them this summer.

Web News

  • Google gets more and more social with their +1 button. If someone +1’s web content, it’s more likely to show up in your social search.
  • There a few new stories in the dropup menus on the MIIS homepage.
  • Get ready for the MIIS micro-philanthropy platform this fall by reading about MiddStart’s early success.

Email Templates

How does what we know about web writing and strategy inform our email templates? Remember the key tenets of web writing…

The Golden Rule: When you send a marketing email, make sure you have a specific goal in mind – like getting new application leads – so that you can track the success of your campaign.

Web & Social Media Updates

Google Search & Social SEO

Google is in the process of introducing a social search component to SEO, meaning that they might give greater weight to content promoted by people in your social circle, i.e. linked to your Google profile. They’ve also introduced a “+1” button that’s much like Facebook’s Like Button.
