Mindanao it is!

I am very excited to announce and lead the 2015 field course to Mindanao, Philippines. It took me a while to decide on Mindanao as the location of the course for January 2015. I knew I wanted it to be a destination in south-east Asia but that meant there were so many choices…difficult choices because each country presents unique opportunities to learn about peacebuilding. If only we could go to each one of them!

I settled on Mindanao primarily to learn from the strong peacebuilding program run by the Catholic Relief Services (our local host organization) but also because Mindanao is entering, once again, a period of peace. I believe our course is therefore aptly timed and I am certain that we will come back with great insights into how peace is being built on the ground.

This is my second visit to Mindanao and I am keen to see what has changed in the region since 2003. I am also looking forward to reconnecting with all whom I met during my earlier travels. This is my fifth time leading a field course. Every group is different with its own strengths and challenges as a team so we’ll see what this one brings.

The Mindanao team comprises of 9 graduate students from the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS):

Margaret (Maggie) Coleman Tylie McMahon Zarina Kaliaskarova
Anoopjot Kaur Maritza Munzon Myshel Prasad
Miranda Salinas Evyn Simpson Corinne Smith

and three undergraduate students from California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB):

Scott Henderson Emma Milotz Lauren Turich

(Please visit this page or click on the links above to learn more about each participant).

I am looking forward to working with this group!
