Who may apply for the Challenges to Peacebuilding course?

Although the course material is geared toward conflict resolution students, students from all specializations are welcome and encouraged to apply. A range of backgrounds and fields of study will add to the analysis and field research done on the ground.

How do I sign up?

Informational meetings will be held to announce each new J-term course. After this event, please refer to the “Application” page of this website. A hard copy of the application form together with all required attachments must be dropped off at Dr. Iyer’s office (McCone 124D) by the deadline given.

Is there a language requirement or language credits?

Language is not a pre-requisite for this course. When necessary, a translator will be provided in the host country.

Language credits may be earned if the course involves travelling to a country where the working languageĀ  is one the student is studying at MIIS.

What are the costs of the course and trip?

Beyond normal tuition costs, the student must purchase his/her own flight and cover visa fees. Students will also pay for their portion of the trip budget, which includes board and lodge, local travel, and administrative charges.

How many units do I get?

Challenges to Peacebuilding is a 4 unit, 600 level seminar course.

Is there a wait list in case the course is full?

Yes. Class size is limited to 15 students.

How are the countries chosen?

The J-Term course is conducted in the field in different ‘post-conflict’ countries around the world. Countries are chosen based on their rich array of social, political, and grass-roots peacebuilding initiatives, as well as being in the process of rebuilding and transforming after a period of violent conflict.
