Real World Music

What music from the world really sounds like.

Often classified as all musics from the non-Western world, the World Music section as a label, and as a department, have had a bad a rap for a long time. Too long. And it’s time to change that. Inspired by stories from abroad, Real World Music is determined to deconstruct the World Music section one track and one story at a time, building it back up with authentic slices of our experiences.

So how do you contribute to this monumental project? Think back to your last trip abroad – the sights, the sounds, the people, the tastes, and the feelings you had before, during, after. Can you picture it? Can put yourself in that time and space again? Good. Is there a song or sound that takes you there every time? Something you heard while you were on the ground? It can be a clip, a genre, or even a phrase that takes you back, but we want you talk about it and what it means to you in context to where you were at the time. And the reward is inherent; not only do we get to listen to some music, but every time a segment goes up on the MIIS Radio website we as a community get to share in the moment with you.

Have a sound you wish to share?

Please send all requests to dlc@miis.edu and as always, enjoy the wonderful world of music!

Please find the MIIStales podcasts in the feed on the home page until they are housed properly.
