Marhaba! (Arabic for ‘Hello’) My name is Sherine. My background is in librarianship, translation and interpretation. As early as I started my career, I knew I wanted a career focused on language and culture. Since 2012, I have been studying and working in translation practice and theory before leaping at the opportunity to come to Monterey, California to pursue my master’s degree in Translation and Localization Management. It is my triple passion for language, culture, and design that brought me to localization, and I am now captivated by the overwhelming number of opportunities to work across multiple languages and cultures.
I live by my ideals and principles, and they shaped who I am today, but I do not impose them on anyone and appreciate it when people do the same. I believe that people have more similarities than differences, and that the only way to arrive at global understanding, and hopefully peace, is to appreciate our diversity, value our similarities and celebrate our differences. Luckily, it is language professionals who have this unique opportunity of working for this common purpose while creating products without borders, changing narratives, and destroying stereotypes.
My love for reading was cultivated in college, and it is probably the best justification for the one million tabs I have open! I call Tolstoy, Noam Chomsky, Edward Said my favorite writers of all time. Beside everything that is language, I love art, music, architecture, Egyptology, calligraphy and good coffee. When I am not working, studying, or running errands to get things done, I love to stop for coffee or go for a long walk, undisturbed, and most importantly without my 10 kg bag pack. If I have to name one takeaway from my experience it would be that the best education one can get is from travelling.
