The creation of a Bay-to-Bay sister relationship between the Bay of Jiquilisco and the Monterey Bay is being explored. It would bring together scientists and researchers from ICMARES (the Marine Sciences Research Institute) of the Universidad de El Salvador, and from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Preliminary discussions have been held to outline a possible scientific collaboration in this regard. In addition, a first-ever academic exchange was held in January 2015 between graduate students of ICMARES and MIIS, to explore the integration of science and policy for sustainable resource conservation and management.
