DPMI: Rwanda Certificate

Completed DPMI Training Certificate.

Our international team of graduate students from the Monterey Institute, and some genuine representatives from other walks of life, partnered with Partners in Health/Inshuti Mu Buzima in Rwanda in January, 2014 for a collaborative service learning project. Our team was designated to provide a solution for high under 5 mortality rates in rural villages. We met with all levels of stakeholders in their homes and places of work to better understand public health issues in Rwanda and developed a project and campaign for alleviating the too often fatal, first 24 hours of life.

We simultaneously engaged in a series of well coordinated dialogues and site visits with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Parliament, which helped to round out our understanding of Rwanda 20-years after the genocide. Our project and certificate training culminated with a presentation to Toni Habinshuti and Didi Bertrand-Farmer of PiH, who then selected one social marketing campaign of the 5 to be adopted.

The experience was first and foremost humbling. I am just grateful to the people and the opportunity to work in the service of others.

In the academic context, this has also qualified me for DPMI Plus, which constructs a complimentary series of deliverables for my IEM Practicum in 2015.
