The Development Project Management Institute (DPMI) is a professional certificate program is for those seeking training for careers in humanitarian relief, emergency response, poverty alleviation, and long-term community development. It combines guided individual readings (completed prior to the commencement of class meetings), three weeks of intensive classroom instruction, and a personal reflection paper submitted three months after the conclusion of classroom work.

The intensive DPMI-training, organized as three separate modules, lasts three weeks. DPMI instructors include director, Dr. Beryl Levinger, from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and fellow development practitioners, Evan Bloom, co-founder of Root Change and Claudia Liebler, a consultant for USAID, Peace Corps, and an array of international development organizations. Combined, these instructors have over 100 years of experience in over 50 countries.

Past participants include local non-governmental leaders, graduate students, development practitioners, career-changers and those interested in expanding their professional skill-set in the areas of strategy development and facilitation. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion from the Development Project Management Institute upon fulfillment of program requirements.

Module #1: Managing Development Projects. In this training module, participants will gain an understanding of the project cycle and how to identify and analyze project opportunities. Participants will become proficient in using the Results Framework, related tools and advanced software to guide project design and monitoring. They also learn how to use indicators to assess projects and accompanying monitoring plans consistent with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Module #2: Social Entrepreneurship and Strategic Partnering. Participants, working within a context of social entrepreneurship, become proficient in the use of tools and techniques to conduct an analysis of vision and mission; identifying core competencies; and forge strategic partnerships to enhance organizational effectiveness. Innovative software applications are introduced to support a simulation.

Module #3: Facilitating Participatory Development. Participants master tools and skills needed to effectively assume the roles of facilitator, trainer, and change agent. Local human resource development is an important component in every development project. The module focuses on transferring skills to participants so they can conduct their own training programs. Topics covered include needs assessment, adult learning practices, community mobilization, stakeholder negotiation, conflict mediation, and the training of trainers.

This is a professional certificate program. Interested undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals are encouraged to apply. The program fee is $1,300 for MIIS students. Academic credit is available (Monterey Institute tuition fees apply).
