Welcome back to returning MIIS students & WELCOME to the incoming students. We’re glad you all are here.

As you finalize your spring schedule, please note new instructor information, updated course dates, and a summary of two recently added workshops.

New Instructors:

Lt. John Vanek will be the new instructor for WKSH 8549 – Human Trafficking, which will be offered April 15-17.  A 25-year veteran of the San Jose Police Department, Lt. Vanek has since 2006 served as program manager for the department’s Human Trafficking Task Force.  He has previously led training seminars on human trafficking for agencies including the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards & Training, the California Emergency Management Agency, the United States Attorney – Northern District of California Law Enforcement Executives Symposium, California Highway Patrol Academy instructors, and the California Attorney General’s Annual Organized Crime, Gang, Criminal Intelligence, and Terrorism Training Conference.  He also received the 2010 Unsung Hero Award from the Victim Support Network for Santa Clara Valley for his anti-human trafficking efforts.

Retired Brigadier General Russ Howard will be the new instructor for WKSH 8542 – Counter Terrorism, which will be offered on February 4-5 and 11-12. Prior to his retirement from the military, General Howard’s postings included serving as Company Commander, 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group in Okinawa, Japan, and commanding the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group from 1990 until 1992.  General Howard holds two bachelor’s degrees, an MA in International Management from MIIS, and a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University.  General Howard’s academic positions include serving as the director of the Jebsen Center for Counterterrorism Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and being the founding director of the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
