Greetings from India–A MIIS Student’s experience as a Frontier Market Scout

Yi-Ching Hwang is a last semester MBA student currently participating in the Frontier Market Scouts program. The objective of this program is to train and send young professionals to emerging or frontier markets to work with and scout out potential social enterprises and connect them with investment funds. This is a new field called Impact Investing, specifically regarding investing in the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) world.

Yi-Ching is currently in India, interning with First Light Ventures (FLV), an independent seed fund affiliated with Gray Ghost Ventures. Her job is two-fold: One, to conduct due diligence on a group of 12 social enterprises and make recommendations to FLV regarding their portfolio addition; Two, to work directly on the ground with a social enterprise called V-shesh located in Chennai.
