Partners of the Americas is seeking two volunteers for Short Term Technical Assignments in Guyana who will work as part of Partners’ USAID-funded Farmer to Farmer Program (FtF).  The FtF program provides technical assistance to agricultural producers, organizations, agribusinesses and universities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the program, U.S. specialists donate their time and expertise and spend two to three weeks on specific technical assignments, working directly with counterparts in the region to address local needs. Volunteers may travel individually or in teams. The Program covers all costs of airfare, lodging, meals, insurance, and any work related expenses.

Position #1: 

Title: Disaster Risk Management Specialist

Location:  Guyana

Potential Dates of Assignment:   2-3 weeks during December 2011 or  Winter 2012

Assignment Summary for Disaster Risk Management Specialist:

The Disaster Risk Management Specialist will be going to Guyana to help prepare a Disaster Risk Management Project where the risks of flooding and droughts will be mitigated through Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production. This proposal will be prepared according to guidelines provided by the donor and the base information and data will be provided by FtF Field Staff.  The Disaster Risk Management Specialist will ideally travel as a team with the Project Development Specialist.

Volunteer Qualifications Requirements:

  • Experience with disaster risk management
  • Small-project preparation skills
  • Experience in third world countries working with small operators
  • Must be a US Citizen

Expected Results:

The Disaster Risk Management Expert will team up with a Project Development Specialist to write a Disaster Risk Management Project where the focus will be to reduce the risks of flooding and droughts through Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production.  This proposal will be submitted to the Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM)

Here are Expected Deliverables for Disaster Risk Management Specialist: 

  • A Disaster Risk Management Project focused at the reduced risks of flooding and droughts through Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production.
  • Volunteer trip report

Position #2: 

Title:  The Project Development Specialist

Location:  Guyana

Potential Dates of Assignment:   2-3 weeks  during December 2011 or Winter 2012

Assignment Summary for Project Development Specialist:

The Project Development Specialist will be going to Guyana to help prepare two projects. One will be a second phase Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production Project.  The second one will be a Disaster Risk Management Project where the risks of flooding and droughts will be mitigated through Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production. These proposals will be prepared according to guidelines provided by the respective donors and the base information and data will be provided by FtF Field Staff.  A Disaster Risk Management Specialist will provide support to the Project Development Specialist.

Volunteer Qualifications Requirements:

·         ·         Experience with small project preparation, knowledge of vegetable production and marketing

·         ·         Experience in third world countries working with small operators

·         ·         Must be a US Citizen

Expected Results:

  1. The Project Development Specialist is required to help develop a second-phase hydroponic shade-house vegetable production project focused at increased production in new areas, expanded marketing support and expanded networking support. This proposal will be submitted to the IDB the current donor agency.
  2. The Project Development Specialist will team up with a Disaster Risk Management Expert to write a Disaster Risk Management Project where the focus will to reduce the risks of flooding and droughts through Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production.  This proposal will be submitted to the Canada Caribbean Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM) Fund.  
  3. Expected Deliverables for Project Development Specialist:

·         Trip report;

·         One new expanded Shadehouse Hydroponic Vegetable Production Project focused on increasing production in new areas, expanded marketing support and expanded networking support;   

·         One Disaster Risk Management Project focused at the reduced risks of flooding and droughts through Hydroponic Shadehouse Vegetable Production.
