The Center for Conflict Studies announces its first annual conference titled ‘Religion and Gender: Identity, Conflict and Power’ from November 8 to 10, 2012. The conference seeks to explore conflicts that arise at the nexus of gender and religion while simultaneously promoting spaces for empowerment that arise in these interactions.
Our keynote speaker on Thursday, November 8 is Hauwa Ibrahim, a lawyer from northern Nigeria and an expert on Sharia law. She was Amina Lawal’s (the Nigerian woman who was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery) lawyer. Ms. Ibrahim’s personal journey is one of triumph and courage and therefore she most certainly is a compelling speaker on her topic “Practicing Shariah Law: Seven Strategies for Achieving Justice in Shariah Courts.” We will start the evening with an inaugural reception for the Center for Conflict Studies which is now integrated with the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
We also have many scholars and practitioners participating in the various panels on November 9 and 10.  Conference details can be found at: http://www.miis.edu/academics/researchcenters/conflict-studies/events/gender-religion
