Lecture Topic: Food Insecurity and Farms Race

As the global population approaches 9 billion, some observers suggest we are entering a new phase of the food crisis. Is the developed countries’ expanding access to farmland around the world adding to the food security of their consumers at the expense of the people of developing countries, or is it contributing to the enhancement of farmland’s productivity and global availability of food, thus helping developing countries as well? What historical, environmental, and social factors do we need to consider in answering these questions? In this session, we will explore these questions.

Michael Kugelman is a Senior Program Associate for South and South East Asia, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
