Applications to January DPMI Trainings in Rwanda and Monterey Due October 31

Development Project Management Institute

What: Professional certificate training in international development project planning, facilitation, and partnership

Where: Monterey, California or Kigali, Rwanda!

When: Monterey (January 6-24, 2014) or Rwanda (January 14-23)

Who: Aspiring international development and social change practitioners interested in developing a practical skill-set and meeting others interested in this field. Interested graduate students, career-changers, and outstanding undergraduates encouraged to apply.

Program Fees: $1,500 for Monterey or $900 for Rwanda training for MIIS students; $2,500 for non-MIIS students for either program (some scholarships available)

Would you like to gain a new professional skill-set this January?

Consider applying for the Development Project Management Institute (DPMI) professional certificate training January 6-24, 2014 in Monterey or January 14-23 in Rwanda.

Would you like to gain professional experience?

After successfully completing the DPMI Training, Monterey Institute students can complete a 3-9 month credit-bearing internship program in which they apply skills covered in the training to benefit their host organizations.

How to Make a Living and Change the World, Launch of PCDN’s Online Event Series with Dr. Craig Zelizer

Given the PCDN’s community desire for increased interaction and learning, the network is pleased to announce their new online event series. Regular series of online webinars with leading scholars and practitioners from around the world, related to core themes of PCDN’s mission are planned for the future. This will include career guidance, advice on scholarships/funding, discussion of new books, applied practice and much more.

To start the series PCDN will be using a wonderful new platform called Shindig  a revolutionary patented technology for large-scale video chat events (see below for more details about Shindig)

This first event with Dr. Zelizer, on How to Make a Living and Change the World will be a pilot to see how strong is user interest and using the technology with a global community. Dr. Zelizer will conduct a short presentation and then there will be time for discussion and questions with the PCDN community. He is one of the world’s experts in the field and has helped mentor thousands of younger practitioners and students in their professional development. NYTimes Article on ‘The Global Elite’s Favorite Strongman’ Highlights Issues To Be Covered in DPMI Rwanda Training

Those interested in taking the Development Project Management Institute training in Rwanda January 14-23, 2014 are encouraged to check-out the September 4 New York Times Magazine article, “The Global Elite’s Favorite Strongman“.

The in-depth biographical piece provides insight on the life an goals of Rwandan President Paul Kagame while highlighting the remarkable transformation Rwanda has undergone as well as the problems that still persist.

The DPMI Rwanda training will cover HIV, health, education, and social marketing. Participants will apply skills developed in the training on a project with a local nonprofit.

Applications for DPMI Rwanda accepted through October 31.

Congratulations to 49 Spring-Summer Immersive Learning Students on Internship Completion

Update on Semester-Long Immersive Learning Program Participants:

GSIPM is proud to congratulate 49 special program winter-spring 2013 fellows on completing their immersive learning fellowship assignments this month, while also wishing the best to the 35 summer-fall 2013 fellows who have recently started their internships or are heading to the field in the next few weeks.

Once again, fellows from the Development Project Management Institute Practicum (DPMI+), Frontier Market Scout (FMS), and International Professional Service Semester (IPSS) have contributed to the nonprofits, social enterprises, IGOs, and NGOs they served; built up their network; and grown personally and professionally during their US and international placements this spring and summer.

Adjunct Prof. and Director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at CNS Jeffrey Lewis quoted in Voice of Ameria

In an July 31, 2013 online article of Voice of America, Jeffrey Lewis commented on the announcement from North Korea that long-range rockets will be launched soon. He was quoted saying that he expects “regular launches for the foreseeable future” even though North Korean officials avoided to respond when he asked them directly in an earlier encounter.

Jeffrey Lewis joined the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in 2010 and became the Director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program.

Saferworld is currently looking for a Program Officer who will work in and on Egypt, supporting the Program Coordinator with drafting reports and policy recommendations as well as projects for women’s security and safety. GSIPM Adjunct Professor Jeffrey Lewis quoted in Washington Post

In one of the recent issues of the Washington Post this week,  Prof. Jeffrey Lewis commented on the situation of the intercepted vessel in Panama which had loaded old weapons from Cuba to be repaired in North Korea. He stated that despite the incident, the ties between Cuba and North Korea will most likely stay intact. He also said that North Korea will probably find other means to keep the business of repairing old weapons alive.

Jeffrey Lewis is an Adjunct Professor for the Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies program at MIIS. He is also the Director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at CNS.

CNS Chair of the Middle East Project Nabil Fahmy New Foreign Minister of Egypt

In post-Morsi Egypt, academics take the lead in the new government. Among the new appointees is Nabil Fahmy, an American University Cairo graduate who received an honorary doctorate from MIIS in 2009. Nabil Fahmy chairs the Middle East Project at CNS and has visited MIIS in the past to discuss crucial topics on the Middle East.

Call for papers: European Peace Research Association (EuPRA) 2013 Conference

The Northern Cyprus Eastern Mediterranean  University in Famagusta will host the upcoming 8th EuPRA Conference on “Building Positive Peace in Europe and Its Neighborhood” on November 7-9, 2013.

Having endured conflict for such a long time itself, Cyprus as the venue gives the conference even more meaning.  The country will be a case study a major focus among topics such as “European Union and its Eastern neighbours”, “The Mediterranean: connecting or dividing continents?”, or ” The state of peace in education in Europe”.
