Climate Change and the Oceans: How Science and Policy Interact

As the fifth event in the MARINE lecture series “What do policy makers need to know about climate change and the oceans?”, MIIS will host an evening presentation with special guest Dr. Wil Burns.  Dr. Burns has worked for more than 20 years in the nonprofit environmental sector, governmental sector and academia.

He specializes in scientific, legal and political issues related to climate change and biodiversity, including the threats facing whales and other marine species. Dr. Burns will be addressing the dynamic issues of fisheries, invasive species and geo-engineering in the context of science and policy and strategies to promote positive stewardship of our oceans.

Public Lecture by Author and Environmentalist Bill McKibben on April 2

Influential author, educator, and environmentalist Bill McKibben will deliver a lecture and reading from his forthcoming book Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet.

McKibben is the founder of 350.org, an international climate change campaign named for the safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, dedicated to uniting the world around solutions to the climate crisis.  McKibben’s writing on the climate crisis and other environmental issues includes twelve books and numerous contributions to various magazines including The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, Orion Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Outside.  McKibben, a scholar-in-residence at Middlebury College, also serves as director of the college’s Fellowships in Environmental Journalism.
