Team El Salvador (TES) is seeking three student leaders to lead the Team El Salvador 9 Practicum during its 2014-2015 program year.

Do you want to gain skills in leadership? International Development? Environmental policy and natural resource management? Survey creation? Improving your Spanish proficiency and communication?

TES leadership is open to all MIIS students, from all departments and fields of study!

Team El Salvador provides a unique, professional opportunity for MIIS students to develop and apply practical skills and enhance language proficiency and multicultural competency in a dynamic international setting.

Team leaders will cultivate a variety of professional skills while gaining real world experience. The ideal candidate has a passion for international development, strong leadership skills, and a willingness to facilitate and manage a variety of program elements, including communication and outreach, program development, fundraising, updating and developing website content and social media sites, event scheduling and management, meeting planning and travel logistics and community engagement.

Ideal Candidates will:

• Speak, write and read Spanish at a 400 level
• Understand the mission and goals of Team El Salvador and
El Salvadoran history and culture
• Have strong communication and organizational skills
• Have experience living and working in rural communities of Latin America (or other developing
countries)
• Have a lucid understanding of the unpredictable nature of development work
• Be personable, dynamic, patient, flexible and adaptable to changing program and project
demands
• Have experience with fundraising
• Develop and deliver compelling presentations to MIIS faculty, prospective team members, etc.

“Bringing Human Rights Home”

Before joining Amnesty International USA as its Executive Director, Steven W Hawkins was the Executive Vice President and Chief Program Officer of the NAACP. He is a nationally renowned attorney and grassroots advocacy leader at the forefront of social justice issues, including death penalty abolition, criminal justice reform and defending civil liberties. As an attorney, he brought litigation that led to the release of three teenagers wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death row in Tennessee. He was also a law professor in South Africa during apartheid, teaching black lawyers who faced discriminatory treatment in the courts. Steven obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and New York University.

Lauryn Agnew: Net Impact & GSIPM Dean’s Seminar 4/15/14

Lauryn Agnew, the founder of Bay Area Impact Investing and President of Seal Cove Financial, is set to speak at MIIS on Tuesday, April 15 at 12:30 pm in McGowan 100.

Lauryn has nearly three decades of experience in developing and implementing strategies in the institutional investment industry. She also serves as trustee on the Board of the San Mateo County Employees Retirement Association, chair of the investment committees of the United Way of the Bay Area and the Girl Scouts of Northern California and member of the finance committee of the Immaculate Conception Academy of San Francisco.

Nicholas Tomb (MAIPS, 2002) participates in VIKING 14

MIIS alum Nicholas Tomb is participating in the Viking 14 exercise, a multinational exercise that simulates an integrated UN Peacekeeping Operation in the fictional country of Bogaland.  VIKING 14 is a Command Post Exercise/Computer Assisted Exercise in the “Spirit of Partnership for Peace.” Previous VIKING-exercises have been stated as the premier Multinational and Comprehensive Approach exercise in the world.

This exercise includes nearly 3,000 participants from almost 50 countries and addresses many of the challenges in civil-military relations that modern, integrated missions face around the world.  More specifically, he is serving as a Civilian Integration Planner with the Armed Forces of Georgia and will spend the 10 day Exercise session just outside of Tbilisi, Georgia.  Nick is participating in the exercise through his affiliation with the Center for Civil-Military Relations at the US Naval Postgraduate School, where he works as an Assistant Program Manager in the Prevention, Relief and Recovery program.

Peacebuilders Fellowship Application due Saturday, March 15th!

The Center for Conflict Resolution’s Peacebuilders Fellowship application is due THIS Saturday, March 15th! “The Center will be choosing eight fellows to travel to four countries (Burma, Mexico, Ethiopia, and the West Bank) for 8 to 10 weeks over the summer. Fellows will work in teams of two in each country to research water conflicts, with an emphasis on gathering the stories of stakeholders in these conflicts. Upon their return, fellows will work with CCS to share these stories over a variety of mediums, including podcasts, video interviews, and digital storytelling.” – See more at: www.miis.edu.

GSIPM Prof. Akaha Attended International Convention of Asian Scholars Conference (ICAS) in Macau.

Professor Akaha presented a paper, “Russia and East Asia: Informal and Gradual Integration,” at the Eighth International Conference of Asia Scholars in Macau, June 24-27.

ICAS was founded in 1997, and has attracted more than 1,500 academics from over 50 countries for this year’s conference. Participants were able to check out new publications during the book fair as part of the conference. For more information and upcoming calls for papers, you can follow ICAS on Facebook.

Come to the 2014 International Professional Service Semester Info Session

Where in the world will you go on your International Professional Service Semester?

The Graduate School of International Policy and Management (GSIPM) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies offers an International Professional Service Semester (IPSS) each spring semester. The centerpiece of the IPSS is a six-month assignment as an intern or consultant in an international organization. Since the IPSS program’s inception in 2002, more than 200 students have served for over 200 organizations in nearly 40 countries. This a great program for students who are focused on gaining practical, hands-on experience while finishing their degree.

If so, join in on the one-two hour IPSS info session facilitated by Carolyn Taylor-Meyer, Director of Immersive Professional Learning and Special Programs, to learn everything you need to know about applying, securing an internship, and utilizing the experience to fulfill graduation requirements.

The Amnesty Club, STOP Club, the Monterey Bay United Nations Association Chapter, and the Peace Coalition are co-sponsoring the 2nd Annual Human Rights Conference, “Celebrating the Art of Human Rights Protection,” presented by the faculty and students of the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The event brings together practitioners, professors, and student activists to celebrate the efforts of rights advocates and to discuss the most pressing human rights issues confronting our world today.

Students should apply for a waived registration fee this week! Registration includes lunch, coffee/tea and treats!

If you want to apply for the funding, please do not pay the registration fee–simply fill out the form and indicate that you are a MIIS student.

IPSS 2012 Second Round Applications Due October 7th 2011!

IPSS has launched the second-round application process that will close Friday, October 7th.

In order to be eligible to apply, all applicants must:

  1. Have secured an internship assignment or be interested in an open IPSS organization.
  2. Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Applicants that meet this criteria and wish to apply will also take an hour-long writing test in October.

Team El Salvador 6 is Looking for New Applicants!

We are now accepting applicants for Team El Salvador 6!  Our online application is up and running.  We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Application Process:

  • Complete the online application and submit all materials (listed on online application) by October 1st.
  • Applicants will be notified via email if they have been selected for an in-person interview.  A portion of the interview will be conducted in Spanish.
  • Applicants will be notified if they have been accepted into the program.

About us:

Team El Salvador is a three-week practicum that provides professional, international opportunities for MIIS students to enhance development expertise, language skills, and multicultural competency through a partnership with La Coordinadora, a community-based organization in the Bajo Lempa region of El Salvador.

Through ongoing projects, we offer invaluable practical experience for burgeoning development professionals and linguists, while benefiting Salvadoran communities.

MIIS MPA Alumnus Jonah Leff to Speak About Life as a UN Weapons Inspector on Wednesday, 9/14

This Wednesday, MIIS MPA ’06 alumnus Jonah Leff will speak about his experiences as a monitor for the UN arms embargoes in Darfur and Mogadishu.  Mr. Leff has a wide range of experiences in tracking arms and ammunition, armed groups and the full range of activities related to armed conflict.  He will address the question, “Do UN Security Council sanctions work?”
