J-Term Practica: DPMI Rwanda, 2017

What I learn from DPMI in Rwanda Through 8 days, I was able to learn a lot about not only HIV/AIDS, which was my group topic, but also how to work well with a multi-cultural team and how to make effective policies.

Firstly, I was really surprised that Rwanda has dealt with HIV/AIDS well. Government of Rwanda has already set condom’s vending machine for free, and they also distribute condoms. Moreover, the education about HIV has been done well. This results comes from the U.S.’s cooperation, so that the ratio of people who has HIV/AIDS in Rwanda is much lower than other Sub-Saharan African countries. In this sense, we can conclude that, money can play effective role to improve public health care problem. On the other hand, I realize that when it comes to education in Rwanda, money or investment cannot play such role as public health care problems, because when we visited the local schools, we noticed that there were better quality and quantity of studying staffs such as PCs and books than we had expected. The problem of the education in Rwanda was that students were not motivated to study hard because of teachers’ quality and their lack of knowledge about how important studying is for their future.

Secondly, group work was a really interesting experience for me, because I was able to learn that silence means no meaning. I cannot speak English very well, so I hesitated to do that in front of people. However, African people use many ways to tell their ideas to teammates. They have never been silence when the discussions and they notice what they are right and what they need to improve so that they can learn something and grow up. I surely have to refer to such aggressive posture. In addition, I notice that what is important for the international communication is that not grammar but the passion. Therefore, I will be more aggressively in the class and add my opinions about topics. Thirdly, thanks to DPMI program, I learn how to make policies more effectively and logically. Results framework and Fish Bone Strategy which I learn through the classes in Monterey are really helpful when we are forced to make policies logically and to explain easily. I was able to notice that how valuable and important the classes I am studying in MIIS are. Fourthly, I was able to make many connections with African people, mainly Rwandans. There

Fourthly, I was able to make many connections with African people, mainly Rwandans. There are few chances to make friends with Africans when I am staying in the U.S., so the connections with Africa is really valuable. Moreover, now I am working as a Japan’s diplomat, and I will have a chance to work for Africa in the near future. At that time, I can ask them for African cultures and friends. It would be wonderful when we collaborate in some projects. Finally, the final presentation was a good opportunity for practicing my public speaking skills. Presenting in front of judges from PIH was a little overwhelming but I was able to present with much confidence. Thus, my DPMI Rwanda experience was unforgettable and helpful for my life. DPMI make students much better as not only a business person but also a global person. I would like to share my experiences with my MIIS friends.
