Independant Practicum, Rwanda & Uganda

This Fall I embarked on a Directed Study tour of East Africa – mainly Kigali, Rwanda and Kampala, Uganda. My independent research focused on the ongoing African Union reforms led by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda. Are they fit for purpose? I sought to find out. In addition I also researched on the One Belt, One Road Initiative with a particular focus on the Standard Gauge Railway recently built in Kenya linking Nairobi to Mombasa. My trip coincided with Kenya’s Presidential elections and after receiving multiple travel warnings from State I could not travel on the new railway to gauge its economic impact on the East Africa corridor.

“Looking into the future. After touring one of the Chinese farming projects in Western Rwanda, I chatted-up with Janvier. All he wants is to become a pilot and fly a big, big aeroplane!”
