William (Billy) Holness, IEP ’17

UN Environment – North America Office

Dates January 30 – May 12

Summary of Experience:

My name is William (Billy) Holness and I am originally from Panama City, Panama. I am a second-year full-time IEP student at MIIS. I am currently enrolled in the DPMI Plus Program and I pursued an unpaid internship at UN Environment – North America Office in Washington, DC, during the Spring 2017 Semester after going through a very competitive selection process.

I would strongly encourage my fellow MIIS classmates to meet with our CACS center to find out the opportunities that are available for us and for the contacts; they can put us in touch with. For instance, for this internship, there were around 70 applicants, so it was a very competitive recruitment process. Part of my success in obtaining it was due to the commitment and support of Carolyn Meyer and our CACS staff as they sent recommendation emails to this office on my behalf. I would encourage students to use the tools we have learned in courses (i.e. DPMI) in the development field, as it can really call the attention of potential employers and opportunities.

I was selected for IPL funding to cover my expenses. I would also strongly encourage my fellow MIIS classmates to enroll in programs like DPMI Plus, IPSS, and FMS and to apply for IPL funding as a way to making it easier to become part of the labor pool given that some internships and professional opportunities end up being entry-level positions after they are completed.
