Web Strategy Team Meeting 7/29

Reminder of how search results work

The MIIS search engine now works the same way the Midd one does, specifically, if your search is the same as a GO shortcut, the user will be sent directly to that page. This means you need to stay on top of updating any GO shortcuts you have created.

Ex: search results for "gtd"

Other Updates from Midd

  • Comments enabled on stories
  • Adding sharing features to stories
  • Added .docx, .pptx, .xlsx file types to uploadable documents in webforms
  • File upload title bug has been fixed!!
  • Course descriptions have been entered into Banner; can now use “Course Listings from Banner” content type

Upcoming Changes

  • New colors to be unveiled next week (note: dev server can only be viewed from on-campus)
  • New headers on the way

Organic forum?

Discussion w/Rob — creating some sort of organic forum for prospective students to ask questions of current students/alumni

Possible solutions: make connecting with us easier

More contact webforms throughout the website

Virtual visit day

Include contact info w/YouTube vids (so for example, if the video interviews a student, include a way to get in contact with that student…if they have given their consent, of course)

Video embed update from Ian

You can now use image:url_of_the_image.jpg to use a different splash image for a video from MiddMedia. This doesn’t work for the pop-out video player used for the Midd homepage waveform or the MIIS homepage spotlight features, but should work everywhere else.

Example:

Web makeover project: what’s next?

  • Web committee has been assembled

  • 170 subprojects emerged from the web makeover

New Drupal bells & whistles? Getting rid of bugs?

  • Both Middlebury & MIIS sites will eventually run on the same codebase
  • This means more automatic, dynamic features can be integrated quickly and seamlessly.
    • Ex: library widget, calendaring features
  • Amherst’s Monster Menus was added to enable hierarchical permissions; however, this is preventing us from implementing workflows for miis.edu
  • Middlebury is working with Amherst to redevelop the code so that it is more compatible
    • Timeline: 3–6 months

What’s Ahead?

Siteimprove

  • Piece of software that mails reports to top-level site editors
  • Alerts you of broken links, misspellings, missing image alt tags, etc.
    • Timeline: before the end of summer

MiddLab

  • New web features to highlight student & faculty academic research
  • CNS and other MIIS departments should definitely get plugged in to MiddLab
    • Impact Driven Technology? El Salvador practicum?
  • Eventually we will add link(s) to MiddLab from miis.edu
  • Next meeting: discuss potential MiddLab projects
