Spanish and Sustainability in Santiago de Compostela

Program Dates: May 24 – June 7, 2020

Middlebury has partnered with the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) to create this immersive learning program in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

The course is multidisciplinary in nature as it includes not only Spanish language and culture, but also experiential learning through real world activities and practical experience.

It is intended for undergraduate and graduate students of Spanish who are interested in pursuing careers in the fields of international environmental policy, sustainable development and/or public administration.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Enhance your linguistic and cultural skills (local music, art and architecture) in an authentic environment.
  • Discover the city of Santiago de Compostela, one of the oldest cities in Spain with a long history as one of the most important religious and cultural centers in the country. Declared by UNESCO a World Heritage city in 1985.
  • Live in the university’s accommodation facilities, a 5-10 minute walk to downtown Santiago.
  • Learn from USC’s university’s experts in the field about the transition to renewable energies in Spain and Europe.
  • Learn about and experience first hand a real world problem that rural Spain is experiencing right now.
  • Explore successful sustainable business models, local innovative projects and sustainable communities in Galicia.
  • Visit an organic tea plantation and other projects that have been implemented locally.
  • Explore the Camino de Santiago – option to walk 3 days of the Camino and visit two ecovillages on the way.
  • Meet and interact with representatives of various institutions, including the private sector, NGOs, GOs and research centers.
  • Discover the Fragas del río Eume Park, a 9,000 hectares Atlantic forest one of the best-preserved natural parks in Europe and the most important example of indigenous forest in coastal Galicia. · Visit the 16th century gardens of Pazo de Ribadulla, a Galician palace.
