Masao’s Experience in the Program

Home Institution: American University

Major: International Relations

“Interning at CNS was a great opportunity to gain professional research experience, especially with beautiful Monterey as a backdrop. I particularly appreciated CNS’ emphasis on independent research; it’s especially easy there to connect with experts who might provide guidance on your specific focus. With thought-provoking lectures and so many resources at hand, CNS proved an ideal environment for beginning or completing a research project. Assigned work was always compelling, and always felt directly connected to the research products CNS produces.

Despite their heavy workloads, I got the impression that CNS staff went out of their way to ensure that our assignments were not only useful to CNS, but meaningful training for us interns. Living conditions were excellent. The Monterey Peninsula offers no shortage of outdoor activities to partake in; the natural setting makes it far easier to brainstorm and focus. Overall, the experience involved a healthy balance of lectures, assigned research tasks, independent research, and social activities which may be difficult to find anywhere else. By the end, I certainly felt energized about the subject matter, and I’d highly recommend interning at CNS to anyone who takes an interest in pressing foreign policy issues.”
