Greenhouses….Inaugurated!

In January of 2011, Team Peru, representing the Andean Alliance and the Becky Fund, began organizing with two communities on greenhouse projects. It’s been eleven months since we began this endeavor and we can look back on all the hard work, challenges and successes. The Andean Alliance along with the communities of Choquecancha and Cacchin worked together on this arduous project and inaugurated five new greenhouses on October 13^th and 14^th.

It was a communal effort. Parents of the students made over 8,000 mud bricks while schoolteachers and directors organized community work days. Local maestros collectively worked over 300 days while the local government provided all transportation of materials and iron rebar for roofs. The Andean Alliance and the Becky Fund managed the entire project and raised a majority of the funds. With so much collective participation, it was only natural to celebrate our communal success.

So celebrate we did! Choquecancha and Cacchin both organized beautiful ceremonies consisting of traditional dances, songs and poetry. Every stakeholder spoke about the project offering gratitude to all parties involved.

There is no doubt that we are all very proud of what we have accomplished. The completion of such ambitious projects made everyone realize our collective power. As an organization we further established ourselves as a part of the community and we are proud to share the success with Choquecancha and Cacchin.
