Both Co.

large-final

Company / Owner Bio

I came to MIIS to Find a way to create positive environmental and social change. After several months at school learning about the impact of agriculture and food insecurity I found myself joining a club focused on the solution to these problems MIIS THIS (or the Middlebury institute of International Relations, Thirst hunger and innovative solutions club). At this club several other students and myself began to discuss aquaponics and eventually built a system in the MIIS Garden. However, this proof of concept was so addicting to work on and sowed such amazing potential as a solution to thirst and hunger, we decided to take it a step further and create a company surrounding aquaponics. So from this club our non-profit Both Co. was born and I have been dedicated to keeping it and its impact growing ever since. Aquaponics and my non-profit are valuable to me because it allows hyper localized food production with positive social and environmental impacts allowing us to produce food that is good for us our oceans and our planet.

How does your company reflect its ethics?

Our mission is: To solve global thirst and hunger using Aquaponics methods. We value: Community, Connectivity-in all things, Full circle learning, Restorative living (using methods that are restorative and not destructive), Persistence, Good Intentions and planning. Our goal is to globally reduce carbon emissions, reduce food waste, reduce water consumption in agriculture by 90%, eliminate the use of pesticides, provide people with organic nutritiously rich food at an affordable price and provide education on sustainable food production to students and food insecure communities.By 2017’s end we plan to have a warehouse in seaside that will help us to meet these goals in Monterey County.

What do you hope to share and/or learn at CSIL’s Holiday Pop Up Market?

We hope to share the knowledge of aquaponics with the community as well as some of the food we have produced in our system. We also hope to make lasting bonds and learn from other organisations, companies and students looking to make positive changes in the community .
