Bridge to Monterey Peninsula College (Bridge to MPC)
An English language course with an academic focus
and a medical assisting content base

Course Description: This course has ambitious goals which stem from the needs of the students who will enroll in order to further their career opportunities. The following goals and objectives address the academic, professional, and language needs of the anticipated students. Academic goals are necessary to perform well in the Medical Assisting program at MPC. Career or professional goals are linked to this specific context and content. Language goals are the main focus of this course, but they are to be achieved through the academic and professional contexts. Therefore, the content of this course is based on Medical Assisting.

Course Goals:

Performative Goals: as a result of taking this course, students will be able to:
1. Produce a selection of academic assignments such as:
-Composing a report based on research.
-Creating a presentation either individually or in pairs.

Affective Goals: as a result of taking this course, students will be able to:
1. Feel confident in asking questions in class.
2. Feel comfortable working with their classmates and teacher(s).
3. Connect with peers by participating in academic and social life on campus (for example, attending a campus-wide lecture).
4. Express empathy towards their future patients by becoming familiar with medical issues (such as access to healthcare).

Metacognitive Goals: as a result of taking this course, students will be in a position to:
1. Plan their career goals by breaking down goals into smaller, actionable steps.
2. Reflect on their progress and accomplishments in and outside of the course.
3. Know their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to study habits and preparing to read text, formulate questions, and formulate responses.
4. Be aware of their performance and know how to seek help by accessing campus resources.

Cognitive Goals: as a result of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand main ideas when listening to both native and nonnative speakers.
2. Recognize medical content words in a text.
3. Know about MPCs MA program’s admission requirements.
4. Know how to assess on-campus resources, both academic and personal, by navigating the MPC website and contacting the appropriate departments/personnel.

Unit Objectives:

Unit 1: Staying Healthy At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • illustrate classroom behavior and expectations in order to be successful in their future community college courses.
  • recognize and identify main ideas in an academic text
  • read an academic text and identify details and main ideas
  • highlight, underline, circle, identify, and annotate an academic text for key important information
  • differentiate between formal/informal language, written and spoken
  • ask clarifying questions in class
  • effectively use note-taking to capture details and main ideas from lessons
  • define words by effectively using context in a “text” to understand the meaning (text could be printed text, oral text, video, etc.)
  • discuss/know measurements of physical/psychological well-being.
  • recognize and use comparatives, superlatives, modals
  • follow up on critical inquiries through researching commercial products.
  • give advice
  • write and speak about opinions, disagreements, and agreements
  • ask questions using correct Wh- question word and sub/aux inversion.
  • use and access a shared Google document.

 Unit 2: Healthcare Culture in the United States of America At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • list and explain the duties of medical assistants
  • compare and contrast the cultural differences between medical systems in their countries of origin and the U.S.A.
  • interview a Medical Assistant student or working professional from the community
  • criticize access to healthcare and health insurance in the United States
  • justify common practices in medical ethics in the United States by researching a topic of interest (privacy, right to die, etc.)
  • continue to develop a sense of community among peers in and outside the classroom by engaging in a small-scale service-learning project
  • continue to build confidence in actively participating in the classroom by asking and answering questions from the teacher(s) and classmates
  • navigate a website for pertinent information
  • write and orally communicate a summary
  • researching professional associations
  • make inferences
