How much does the program cost?

The program fee is $2612 (includes single and double occupancy lodging, food, presentations, workshops with community leaders, seedlings, and local transport). Students should budget for their airfare, international medical insurance, and any other miscellaneous costs.

By when should I apply?

The priority application deadline is November 15. The final application deadline space permitting is January 10.

What are the course options for this course? When can I register?

Students can take the 4-unit course options in the following departments (EPM and ICC–pending approval). Dr. Lyuba Zarsky will oversee those students completing the 4-unit EPM course. Dr. Gabriel Guillen will work with students in the Spanish and ICC courses.

Registration for spring will start the first week in December. Students should apply and be accepted before registering for the course.

Auditors may be accepted if space is permitted. However, those seeking academic credit will receive preference.

Do I need to know Spanish?

Spanish language ability is not required, but will be helpful. The program will include local interpreters.

What vaccinations do I need to have?

Students should follow the recommended vaccination protocol for Colombia as recommended by the CDC.

Do I need a visa?

US citizens and permanent residents do not need a visa for this short trip to Colombia. It is the responsibility of the student to research what visa is required for a tourism/study trip to Colombia based on your citizenship. Students can meet with IPL Director Carolyn Meyer to research visa requirements as needed.

How do I apply for a 1,000 USD EL award?

Students should apply for an EL award at http://go.miis.edu/elfunding by December 1. Please note that you can receive up to one EL award per academic year.

Can I receive financial aid?

Students eligible for Federal financial aid can request funding for the full cost of attendance for this program including the deposit. Students must consult with the Office for Student Financial Planning at MIIS to apply for additional loans to cover the cost of this course.

Is international insurance required?

Yes, students must have international medical insurance, medical evacuation, and repatriation insurance for this trip. You can consult your US insurance to see if it covers you abroad. If not, you should purchase a plan through GeoBlue or another provider. These plans typically run $100 per month and can be purchased in one-month increments.

When can I purchase my flight?

You should not purchase your flight until instructed to do so by the program leads. This will likely take place in mid-January.
