The Translation Project and TMS Course Portfolio

  • Introduction: This portfolio includes the localization project that we completed for our client Monterey Bay Aquarium. Our goal was to translate the website of Monterey Bay Aquarium into three languages: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Russian. The tools that we utilized to do project management, pseudo translation, translation, reviewing and set up TM and TD are the translation management system of WorldSever, CAT tools including Trados and MemoQ. Through mutual help and coordination among team members, this project enables us to better understand the entire translation process and tackle the problems that we may encounter in real-world translation career. After being trained in the course of TMS with Professor Wooten, I myself have been greatly familiarized with not only how to accomplish translation management, but also the status quo and the future trend of translation industry, which surely has prepared me for my translation career in the future.

Presentation on Lessons Learned

 

  • The knowledge I have gained: In the course of TMS with Professor Wooten (also the CEO of AccuLing), we have been taught mainly how to use the translation management system of WorldServer. The skills we have developed include setting up and maintaining TM and TD, creating Workgroup, Workflow, project-specific filters, Cost Models, Quality Models, projects, and among others. Besides WorldServer, we also applied TMS knowledge to learning new systems like Memsource, XTRF, Lingotek and WordPress. The professor also introduced us to translation crowdsourcing, a new trend of translation industry. In the guest lecture by Steve Richardson, former head of Machine Translation, current head of Translation Systems at a church, we were introduced to Microsoft Translator Hub, the MT system that the Church selected due to its superior quality and customized pricing. In this course, I was especially intrigued by the idea and related technologies of translation crowdsourcing which is not only the translation solution itself, but also a marketing strategy that will build loyal audience for for-profit companies. So I decided to further explore this area in the course of Translation Crowdsourcing with Professor Wooten next semester.
