Fogata/Bonfire Del Monte Beach

Este miércoles el 3 de Julio a las 6:30 vamos a tener una fogata en la playa Del Monte muy cercana a MIIS. Nos reuniremos cerca del edificio donde alquilan canoas (kayaks) e iremos un poco hacia la derecha a encontrar un sitio chévere para la fogata. Favor de avisarnos por correo electrónico si vas a asistir para que sepamos cuánta comida comprar. Gracias, y os esperamos ahí. Si no os vemos ahí, Que paseéis feliz día de la independencia y muy buen fin de semana, también.

This Wednesday July 3 at 6:30pm we will have a bonfire on Del Monte Beach, close to MIIS. We will meet near the kayak rental building and walk toward the right to find a good spot for the bonfire. If you intend to come, please notify us by email so we know how much food to buy. Thank you, and we hope to see you there, otherwise have a great Fourth of July and a nice weekend.

NOTE: Please bring your own blanket and wear your own clothes. We will have marshmallows, hot dogs and soda. If you’d like to bring chips, food or more drinks, please bring them!

Colton Hall

Venite a la hora de conversación martes el 2 de julio en Friendly Plaza (queda enfrente de Colton Hall). Vamos a ir adentro de Colton Hall para escuchar una charla de un historiador a las 12:20 p.m. En octubre de 1849, la primera constitución de California fue redactado en este lugar histórico.

Join us for Spanish conversation hour Tuesday, July 2nd outside on the grass in front of Colton Hall! We will then go inside Colton Hall and listen to a talk from a historian at 12:20 p.m. In October 1849, California’s first Constitution was drafted in this historic site.

Study tips

Quisiéramos ofrecerles algunas pautas y sugerencias para maximizar su aprendizaje este verano. A parte de sus clases y la tutoría, cuando tienen tiempo:
1. Leer tus libros favoritos (que han leído en ingles) en español.
2. Poner subtítulos en español cuandoquiera que vean la televisión y películas. También ver programas, noticias, y películas en español con subtítulos en inglés al principio, y más adelante en español, dependiendo en su nivel de comprensión auditiva.
3. Escuchar música en español, leyendo la letra si es posible–se pueden buscar videos en Youtube, pongan el nombre de la canción y “letra” después y así pueden seguir la letra (the lyrics).
4. Hagan ejercicios en el sitio web: http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php
5. Cuando te encuentras con alguien que hable español, practica sin avergonzarse. Es importante esforzarse y es normal que hagan errores, pero así se aprende a comunicar. Suerte y favor de visitarnos para ayuda extra.
We would like to offer some study tips and tricks to maximize your language-learning experience this summer. Besides your classes and tutoring:
1. Read your favorite books in English in Spanish, that way you will know the plot and be able to follow along and learn both vocabulary and grammar.
2. Put subtitles in Spanish anytime you watch TV or a movie. Also watch the news, shows, and movies in Spanish with subtitles. The subtitles should be in English for beginners, and in Spanish for intermediate and advanced students.
3. Listen to music in Spanish, while reading the lyrics if possible. If you type in the name of a song on Youtube, you can write “letra” after it and usually get the lyrics on the screen or in the description below.
4. Do exercises at http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php , it is an excellent resource that provides feedback.
5. Whenever you encounter a Spanish speaking person, make an effort to speak in Spanish. It’s important to overcome shyness and embarrassment, it’s normal to make mistakes, and that’s how you learn. Good luck and please visit us for extra help!

Película: Como agua para chocolate

Mañana miércoles 26 de junio a las 3:15-5:45 p.m, vamos a ver la película Como agua para chocolate en Morse B104. Vamos a servir comida mexicana porque el argumento de esta película ocurre en México. También vamos a explicar la cultura mexicana y las palabras importantes antes de que empecemos con la película.

We will be watching Como agua para chocolate tomorrow, June 26th in Morse B104 from 3:15-5:30 p.m. We will be serving mexican food since the story in the movie takes place in Mexico. Before starting the film, we will be explaining its relevance to Mexican culture and important vocabulary words highlighted throughout the film.

Lunchtime conversation

Queridos estudiantes, mañana el 25 de Junio, no habrá conversación durante el almuerzo porque nosotros y los profesores nos vamos a reunir para planificar mejor este verano. El miércoles volveremos a tener la conversación desde las 12 hasta la 1 en Samson. La tutoría entre 2:30 y 5:00 no será afectada. Gracias por comprender.

Dear students, tomorrow Tuesday June 25^th there will not be conversation during lunchtime at Samson due to a faculty meeting. Lunchtime conversation will resume on Wednesday June 26^th from 12pm to 1pm. Tutoring from 2:30 to 5:00pm will not be affected and will proceed as normal. Thank you for your understanding.

Diarios de motocicleta/The Motorcycle Diaries

On Thursday evening June 20th from 4:30 to 6:30 in Morse B104 we will be showing the movie Los Diarios de Motocicleta, a biographical film about Ché Guevara. We will be providing refreshments and tortas, a quiche-like pastry cherished in Argentina. We look forward to seeing you there!

Este jueves, en Morse B104 el 20 de Junio entre las 4:30 y las 6:30 se mostrará Los Diarios de Motocicleta, una película biográfica sobre Ché Guevara. También habrá refrescos y tartas–una comida amada en la Argentina. Favor de venir y desfrutar de esta película interesante, os esperamos ahí.
