Earth Day in Monterey

Last Friday, the ESL students celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up one of Monterey’s local beaches, Del Monte Beach.  Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess), there wasn’t much to clean.  Nevertheless, the students were in high spirits, despite the cloudy weather and lack of trash to pick up.  After filling up their recyclable garbage bags as much as they could, everyone received reusable travel mugs as a thank you for doing their part to save the planet.  The rest of the afternoon was spent eating trail mix and playing sports!  Soccer and volleyball were the games of choice until Luke, the resident sports expert (and cornerback for the only undefeated team in his 4th grade, all-city-youth-football league) taught the students how to play football. Everyone was throwing perfect spirals by the time they left the beach!   The sun finally came out as everyone packed up to leave, but it felt like it had been out the entire time.
