Big Ideas for Community Development from Cusco, Peru

June 19, 2010

Hola compañer@s! Team Peru arrived in Cusco earlier this week to prepare for our health and education summer projects within indigenous communities. Today we will travel to Calca and set up headquarters. We’ll be living in one house with 13 beds, so stay turned for all the drama, crying, and fighting over 2 bathrooms. Real World Calca will soon be coming to the Team Peru YouTube channel.

Yesterday we brainstormed a few “big ideas” about our collective vision of community development (and what will guide us through the summer):

  1. 1 day can make a big difference.
  2. Hope and change (Inspired by Kelley Calvert)
  3. Try not to mislead and give false hope
  4. A change in knowledge does not me a change in behavior
  5. Breaks and snacks = awesome
  6. We are more capable than we think we are
  7. Gringadas: silly foreigners like to do silly “big ideas” reflections (Thanks Hilda for reminding us that not everyone shares our worldview!)

Mission

Our mission is to provide and implement sustainable programs and projects in collaboration with the indigenous people of the Sacred Valley of Perú in an effort to improve their lives and reduce poverty in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner. Furthermore, we work to support local NGOs with whom we have shared values using the skills and tools we possess.
