Team Peru: A Documentary

April 22, 2012

“Be the Solution” is our motto at the Monterey Institute for International Studies, a simple string of words that implies an expectation of responsibility and initiative. Team Peru and the Andean Alliance embody our school motto; slipping from one facet to another including personal, societal, and cultural efforts.  Adam and Aaron (the founders of Team Peru) along with many other MIIS students have brought empowerment to education and to the communities they work in inspiring a micro-model for the changing education and development paradigm. After getting to know some significant actors in the program, I am determined that the story of Team Peru needs to be told. I began my research for a documentary by asking people about the program.

To elaborate on the complexity of what Team Peru is, my experience on my search for a definition ranges from detailed MPA jargon to glowing participants who try to find the right words and pictures to reflect their intimate connection to Team Peru. At the same time I have spent time asking non-participants for their knowledge about the program and have received similar short phrases referring to friends and acquaintances that have “gone to Peru to garden” or the cool laptop covers they see on campus. The more I learn about this program the more I feel the need to share the innovative function that provides inspiration and technical development needed for our transforming globalized society. The venue of communication that I have chosen is film in order to convey a multi-sensory form of story telling that can provide a clear image of what Team Peru is. My approach will be to follow specific individual participants and to share their experience in order to provide audiences engagement through a process of self-identification. During the summer we will be putting out a short 3-5 minute video on the YouTube site in order to create an interactive experience. I will also interview other important stakeholders and create a bigger story for a larger documentary that will be developed throughout the next couple of semesters. I am excited to embark on this adventure and to create a new medium of communication for such a great organization.  I encourage you to stay tuned.
