Pedagogical Ecosystem

The pedagogical ecosystem consists of the actions and functions that frequently take place in a classroom.  MALL can perform these same functions in new more efficient or more interesting ways.   MALL could also create brand new opportunities for pedagogical actions!

Traditional classroom activities (which could be improved using MALL)

  • Gathering students’ opinions
  • Handing back homework
  • Asking students to share a personal story which illustrates a topic
  • Keeping track of new vocabulary on the board
  • Storing grades in a student-accessible gradebook
  • Taking attendance
  • Submitting homework
  • Exit ticket
  • Bringing in outside resources
  • Make-up work (after an absence)
  • Bringing in absent students
  • Spelling tests
  • Mentoring/coaching by an expert
  • Textbooks which guide through a lesson
  • Reminding students of an upcoming assignment
  • Documenting student interactions/creation
  • Breaking up into small groups
  • Simulating interaction
  • Modeling an activity

Potentially new classroom activities (which could be invented due to MALL)

  • “Mission control” activities, where a group of learners directs the actions and gathers input from “field agents” who are outside of the classroom.
  • “Scavenger hunt” activities, where learners have to carry out a series of tasks and record themselves (text, audio, video) performing them
  • Simulations on a much larger scale – involving many actors, different levels, different settings
  • Geo-located activities (content/interaction get tied to a location)
  • Video projects – filming video is within all learners’ reach
  • QR codes which can be placed in an environment to prompt interaction/output
  • Anonymous feedback
  • Portfolio-based assessment
